Silence returns to the garden in the last month of the year. The time has come for you to complete all the tasks that have accumulated over the year.

Send your garden tools into hibernation clean and tidy. To do this, remove all dirt from them, oil metal parts and sharpen your pruning tools.

  • Store all leftover garden soil, fertilizer and pesticides in a clean, dry and frost-free place
  • Sort your remaining seeds and store them in a dry, dark place. This will give you an overview of what you need to get for next year
  • You can carry out a germination test on older seeds to check their germination capacity

Everything else that needs to be done:

  • Mulch your beds and shrubs with garden waste to protect the soil and your plants from the winter weather
  • Replace the glue rings on your fruit trees to protect them from voracious guests

Preparing for the next gardening season

  • Write down your experiences from this year in your garden diary
  • It is important that you record your bed plans each year. You can then determine your wishes for the coming year and give the plants a suitable spot
  • be sure to follow the crop rotation rules to maintain soil health and fertility

Protection for plants & animals

  • Perennial plants that overwinter here without any problems should be protected from the cold with a layer of brushwood or leaves
  • Hardy herbs must also be protected from the low temperatures
  • Nesting or feeding areas offer birds a shelter for the cold season

Gardening indoors

  • Sowing potted herbs on the windowsill: Herbs such as parsley or chives can also be grown indoors without any problems. All you need is regular watering and even temperatures
  • Microgreens from beet or radishes provide you with valuable vitamins and nutrients for the cold season
