Description

Die Yambohne ist ein uraltes mexikanisches Wurzelgemüse, deren Knollen als Jícama bezeichnet werden - das bedeutet in der Indianersprache Nahuatl "Schmeckendes". Die Schlingpflanze bildet große runde Knollen mit weißem knackigem Fleisch, welches von der Konsistenz her Rettich ähnelt und auch beim Kochen knackig bleibt. Der Geschmack ist eher süß und erinnert an Apfel und Nashi-Birne. Die Wurzeln lassen sich wie die in der asiatischen Küche beliebten Wasserkastanien verwenden, sie müssen vor Verzehr allerdings sehr gründlich geschält werden, die Schale ist ungenießbar. Traditionell wird die Wurzelknolle auch gerne in Stifte geschnitten und mit etwas Zitronensaft und Chilipulver als Snack gegessen.

Growing tips

Wie alle Bohnen ist auch diese eine Schlingpflanze. Vorkultur: Etwa 4 Wochen vor möglicher Auspflanzung. Die Samen von Pachyrhizus erosus vorher über Nacht in Wasser einweichen. Nach den letzten Frösten auspflanzen ins Gewächshaus oder ins Freiland, oder Kübelkultur an warmem Standort.
