Description

Other names: Date wax, Haricot Beurre date, Dadelboon, Date wax bean. This "date bean" is so called because its bean grains have the shape and color of a date (Phoenix dactilyfera), i.e. coffee-brown "café au lait foncé" and a long oval shape. Very early and rich-bearing and the finest of all waxbush beans with golden-yellow pods. Plant height 35 cm/13.8 in, white flowers, 4 pods per pod, 5 seeds per pod. Pod length 12 cm/4.7 in, width 1.2 cm/0.5 in. First light green then waxy yellow pod with straight shape, round cross-section, without strings. Grains straight, unicolored light brown. Used as a green bean. Seeds ripen late, germination rate 60%. Medium growth, loose plant structure. Originated around 1880 in Erfurt (D), probably through the seed catalog J.C.Schmidt. Especially in Germany it was a popular butter bean with these characteristics: good resistance to moisture and rain, productive and very fine taste. Between 1880 and 1914 it was offered by the most important German seed dealers. The date was previously considered lost. Obtained and propagated in 2019 by Kiekeberg Museum gardener Matthias Schuh from Russia.
