So many of you have been working so hard today that I almost—but only almost—feel guilty. That’s because I’ve found the best excuse ever: Just like Frederik in Leo Lionni’s book, I’ve been collecting colors and a story today to share with you 😄 And here’s the story: Late yesterday afternoon, I found this slender bee sleeping in a cucumber flower (Photo 1). Then a honeybee flew up and wanted to collect the pollen inside. At first, she didn’t notice that the spot was already taken and bumped into the slender bee, waking her up (I was too slow to get a photo of the collision 😉). The narrow-bodied bee, abruptly roused from her sleep, turns around to pretend to be working, but just preens a little and goes back to sleep (Photo 2). This morning, after that restful break, she was full of energy and made up for all the time she’d wasted by collecting a looooot of pollen from the mountain mint (Photos 3 and 4). And that’s the end of the story 😀 Various species of bumblebees were also hard at work, as was this dung bee (a species of hoverfly). It may not have a pretty name, but I still think it’s beautiful—especially when the sun shines on it.
