🍅 #MyTomatoes, Part 3 🍅 ...Who among you still remembers Idgie, the "Bee Charmer," who ran the legendary "Whistle Stop CafĂ©" in Whistle Stop, Alabama, back in the day with her friend Ruth? ☕ ...Admittedly, to remember that, you would have had to leave your couch back in the early ’90s to catch the enchanting movie “Fried Green Tomatoes” at the cinema... (It doesn’t happen often, but for me it’s a fact: the movie is clearly better than the book!) ...in this cafĂ©, the house specialty is "fried green tomatoes." These are actually unripe, aka green tomatoes, sizzling away in peanut oil! Whether the solanine content of these unripe fruits is particularly beneficial to health is a question best left open for now đŸ€· Here, however, we’re talking about a variety that isn’t red when ripe, but green: but forget “Green Zebra” 🩓 and the like—visually pretty, but not really convincing in terms of flavor! The true queen of flavor is âžĄïžâ€œAunt Ruby’s German Green”!âŹ…ïž Period, exclamation point!❗I can wholeheartedly recommend this wonderfully aromatic, very tomato-flavored variety to every heirloom tomato fanatic! ...why aren’t these available in the supermarket? ...They aren’t made for long transport routes, 🚚 once they’re ripe and shimmering green-bronze, they should be enjoyed immediately...In any case, I wouldn’t want to be without this variety anymore—that’s all I need to say...except maybe this: Slice off a piece of rye bread, spread it thickly with fresh sour cream butter, top with Aunt Ruby slices, season with Fleur de Sel and black pepper, and you’ve got tomato heaven on earth! 😋 I discovered this variety several years ago at a #prospecierara event, and it’s been a regular under my tomato canopy ever since! #greenTomatoes #AuntRubysGermanGreen Aunt Ruby’s German Green isn’t a new variety, but an old heirloom tomato. It’s of German origin, but was further cultivated many years ago by American Ruby Fair Arnold in Greenville (Tennessee, USA).

I am a fried green tomato eater and still alive though I was scolded by this group about them and bolted parsley. 😂 That said...have any of you tried frying these that are supposed to be green? I wonder what they would taste like. I may have to grow a green variety to test.

... @Jdub, ...
