...next up is @vesuvio-100114, also known—with a slightly erotic twist—as #Venus'sBreasts...☺️
The “Vesuvio” tomato—often called Pomodorino del Piennolo del Vesuvio—is a traditional Italian tomato variety from the region around Mount Vesuvius near Naples. It’s considered a true specialty there.
Appearance
Small to medium-sized fruits (approx. 20–30 g)
Bright red
Often slightly oval or pear-shaped
Typical small point at the bottom
Firm skin and compact flesh
Another characteristic feature is that the tomatoes are traditionally hung in large clusters (“Piennolo” literally means “hanging bunch”).
Flavor
The Vesuvio tomato has a very intense aroma:
sweet and fruity
yet pleasantly spicy and slightly tart
low in water content, resulting in a particularly concentrated flavor
Thanks to the volcanic soils surrounding Mount Vesuvius, it develops a particularly robust flavor that is highly prized in Italy—especially for pasta, pizza, and sauces.
Origin
The variety originates from the Campania region in southern Italy, directly from the slopes of Mount Vesuvius near Naples. It has been cultivated there for centuries. Since 2009, it has even held a Protected Designation of Origin (PDO).
Special Feature
One of its most fascinating characteristics: These tomatoes have an exceptionally long shelf life. Thanks to their thicker skin and low water content, they can be stored for months—traditionally hung in bunches. During this time, their flavor actually becomes even more intense.
I’ve been growing these crunchy little tomatoes for about 10 years now, and I wouldn’t want to be without them!...but to be honest, I’ve never managed to tie them into bundles—the “Venus breasts” always get snacked on first...☺️

Bin schon gespannt. 😋
... Update: 2 Vesuvio hatte ich diesjahr gepflanzt...
... Eine davon wurde von einer Wühlmaus gekillt... 🤬🤬🤬
