Planting potatoes: here's how
Which potato to plant?
There are seed potatoes that are specially designed for growing potatoes. These are single-variety potatoes with a relatively small size (between 3 - 4 cm). Potatoes are not usually grown from seed in the garden, as the harvest is usually small. In addition, potato seeds do not germinate reliably.
Pre-sprout potatoes
By pre-sprouting, you give your potato plants a head start in growth. The plant will develop faster in your bed, allowing you to harvest earlier. It will also be hardier and more resistant to pests and diseases. Start pre-sprouting around four to six weeks before the planned planting date (from February/March for early varieties).
When to plant potatoes?
When you can start planting potatoes depends on your location. The soil temperature should be at least 7 °C, which is around April in warmer regions and May in higher areas.
Planting depth & plant spacing
- Planting depth: approx. 5 cm - Planting distance: 30 - 50 cm, in a mixed culture approx. 70 cm - Row spacing: 40 - 50 cm
