How to start your gardening season even earlier

Heat your cold frames

Rotting horse manure releases heat that you can use to warm up your cold frame. With this natural heating system, you can start your cold frame season as early as the end of February. You can find out exactly how to do this here.

Procedure

  • Dig the soil in the cold frame to a depth of 50-70 cm (also possible in the fall)
  • Fill with a 30 - 40 cm/11.8 - 15.7 in thick layer of horse manure at the beginning of February and press down well
  • For manure without bedding (straw), mix in leaves or straw 1:1
  • Spread a 20 cm/7.9 in thick layer of mature humus on top
  • Fill the rest with the excavated soil or garden soil
  • Close the windows and wait approx. 2 weeks, then your cold frame is ready for the first sowing!
