The kinds of things you find in the compost... Actually, I just wanted to get a little cardio in and spend an hour getting the garden ready for winter. That meant, once again, turning the compost to make room for all the fall leaves that will soon be coming. I found exactly the right amount of potatoes we were missing for dinner, a lost pocket knife, two nests of centipedes—each containing many dozen of them—and even two oil beetles that are on the Red List. On the one hand, they’re gross and actually poisonous, but on the other hand, they indicate that there really are suitable wild bees here in the middle of the city and that there’s a small patch of reasonably intact “nature.” I’m happy with these little discoveries. They made my day. 😃
