Have you heard of the "onion chicken"?
When I was at the get-together at @Mirilü’s, @Lenchen and her partner mentioned "asparagus chicken." I was so surprised that I even joked about whether it was an extremely expensive broiler, like corn-fed chicken, for example.
No! It’s actually a leaf beetle whose larvae specialize in certain plant species. The lily beetle—or onion beetle—feeds exclusively on lilies and alliums.
It’s fascinating, too—you can see it pretty clearly in the first picture. The larvae carry their poop on their backs as protection against predators 🥴
They completely devoured my winter onion plants 😳
