...A bit of geeky talk about #grapevines, Part 2
...I recently wrote a bit about #grapevinebloom, remember? ...it was about #flower buds, pollination, and so on...
...Today, a few days have passed; the bloom on my "#MuscatBleu" is over, but the pollination went very poorly! Well, and it wasn’t the fault of some sluggish little bees, or even the wind that didn’t blow—no, you may vaguely recall that the vine does everything on its own...
...if the grapes are incompletely pollinated, we speak of so-called "#thinning"; this term comes from the fact that, when you run your cupped hand over the cluster, all the unfertilized berries fall off... In the photos, you can see the same cluster before and after flowering. Before flowering, about 120 buds are visible; after flowering, there are only about 50 fertilized berries left...
...and who is to blame for this mess? ...Quite simply: it was the heat!
...when vines bloom during a very hot spell, fruit drop can easily occur; in extreme heat, the clusters can even turn into tendrils that bear no berries at all...🤷
Fun fact to wrap things up: Botanically speaking, the inflorescence of the grapevine isn’t a bunch of grapes, but a panicle! Currants, on the other hand, have bunches of grapes as their fruit clusters! ...
