Which vegetables can I sow now?

Sowing winter vegetables

Fall is just around the corner and you might think the gardening year is coming to an end. But wait! There are still some crops that can be sown now!

Field bean

  • When: until the end of September
  • How: 6 - 10 cm/2.3 - 3.9 in deep, planting distance 10 cm/3.9 in, row spacing 60 cm /23.6 in
  • Harvest next spring (from March)

Lamb's lettuce

  • When: until October
  • How: 0.5 - 1 cm/0.2 - 0.4 in deep, in double rows 5 - 8 cm/2 - 3.2 in apart, 15 cm/5.9 in between rows
  • Harvest: throughout the winter

Spinache

  • When: until the beginning of October
  • How: 1 cm/0.4 in deep, 3 cm/1.2 in apart in the row and 10 - 15 cm/3.9 -5.9 in between the rows
  • Harvest: mid-November to early April

Swiss chard

  • When: until mid-November
  • How: 2 cm/0.8 in deep, 40 x 40 cm/15.7 x 15.7 in spacing with fleece layer - Harvest: until January

Winter cress

  • When: until the end of September
  • How: do not cover with soil, 5 - 10 cm/2 - 3.9 in plant spacing, 30 cm/11.8 in row spacing
  • Harvest: 8-10 weeks after sowing, throughout the winter

Garlic

  • When: until the beginning of October
  • How: 2 - 3 cm/0.8 - 1.2 in deep, 10 cm/3.9 in planting distance
  • Harvest from July

Postelein

  • When: September to February
  • How: sow broadly, cover only lightly (0.5 cm/0.2 in) with soil
  • Harvest: throughout the winter

Winter onions

  • When: until the beginning of October
  • How: Plant onion sets deep enough into the soil so that the top third is still visible, planting distance 10 cm/3.9 in, row spacing 30 cm/11.8 in
  • Harvest from May
