Endive and frisée varieties are late summer salads with a delicate bitter taste. Originating from the chicory family (Chicory), they are closely related to radicchio and chicory.
Origin:
Mediterranean (Italy, South of France)
Endives are grown in summer and autumn and, like other lettuces, require sufficient moisture. However, they have slightly higher nutrient requirements compared to lettuces. When plants are closely spaced, the interior of the plant bleaches and turns yellow. These parts of the lettuce head taste particularly tender. Since endives form a taproot, the seedlings should not be pre-cultivated for too long.
