Description

Palm kale is a variety of cabbage and belongs to the cruciferous family (Brassicaceae). It is mainly found in northern Germany, where it is known as the "(East) Frisian palm". It owes this name to its growth habit. The arrangement of the blistered and slightly downward curled leaves has a palm-like appearance. The leaves are dark green to black-green. It can be used in the same way as kale and is even somewhat finer and milder in taste. However, it is not frost-resistant.

Growing tips

In the garden, you can pre-grow your palm kale in larger pots or cultivate it entirely in them. This way, the plants will be mobile if there is a threat of frost, as palm kale only tolerates this to a limited extent. It is best to sow your palm kale outdoors after the Ice Saints in May. It likes a place with direct sunlight. The development time is only about 70 days. Harvest the individual leaves from the bottom up and leave the top rosette standing. This gives the palm kale its eponymous shape. In addition, the plant can continue to grow and reach great heights of up to 3 meters. This palm kale impresses with its attractive color and strong taste. Some purple cabbage varieties only change color in the cold, but Dazzling Blue also looks good in summer. The color naturally becomes even more intense with the onset of the cold season. Midribs are purple, leaves dark green with purple. The taste is very typical of palm kale: not as strong as kale, milder, for some also more pleasing, but still nice and intense.
