Bijou is a loose-leaved variety with dark red leaves that is ideal for harvesting baby lettuce leaves over a long period of time (simply pick two or three outer leaves from each plant each time and allow the plants to grow on to continue picking).
Non hybrid
Not frost resistant
Sow the lettuce seeds in moist soil in the greenhouse and keep the soil moist, but not waterlogged. Sow successively - about every two weeks - to achieve a continuous harvest. Plant out the plants in containers when the danger of frost has passed and plant them in rich, moisture-retaining soil. Watch out for slugs and snails - control them with granules or barriers (eggshells, sawdust or copper tape) to prevent damage to the plants.
