Description

The El Jefe variety is early ripening and high yielding. Its pods grow up to 10 cm long. This variety is also ideal for chili beginners, as it germinates quickly and is easy to grow. Jalapeños impress with their thick fleshy fruit walls and stand out with their typical rounded end. They often have a cracked, corked surface, which Mexicans even regard as a sign of quality. Unripe jalapeños are green, sometimes with dark spots; when ripe, they take on a strong, uniform red color. Jalapeños are one of the few chilies that taste very good even when green and unripe. When they are ripe red, the taste takes on a pleasant sweetness. With their mild heat, jalapeños are ideal for eating fresh, as well as for cooking, stuffing, pickling and grilling.

Growing tips

Chili should be grown in nutrient-rich soil in a sunny location. For a rich harvest, the first flower (terminal bud/'king flower') should be broken off. This promotes flower and fruit formation on the side shoots. However, this is not as important for chili peppers as it is for peppers. Pull the plants with 3-4 shoots and remove the remaining shoots. In Central Europe, cultivation is usually annual, but the highest yield is only achieved 2-3 years after planting. To achieve this, the plant must be overwintered indoors. The fruits are harvested from July to September, depending on the variety and weather conditions.
