Origin Astrantia major is a forest and meadow perennial native to Central and Eastern Europe, occurring particularly in the mountains up to 2,000 meters above sea level and along ponds and rivers. Its botanical name is a combination of the Greek words for star (=aster) and flower (=anthos). In common parlance, it also bears the less graceful name "Strenze". The starry aster belongs to the genus Astrantia within the umbellifer family (Apiaceae).
