Japanese spring onions 'Ishikura' are among the easy-to-grow leek onions without bulb formation, with long, white, conspicuously thick shafts and fresh green, upright foliage. The taste is mild-spicy and very aromatic. They can be eaten raw in salads, dips and herb curd as well as fried and boiled. They are an important ingredient in many dishes of Asian cuisine, especially Japanese, where it is used as naga negi for sukiyaki and soups. The variety 'Ishikura' is very hardy, making it excellent for year-round cultivation. It can be sown for summer harvest from early March, as well as in the fall for overwintering harvest in the spring. It is very suitable for bed edging as it grows in a horsty manner and is not overgrown and can also be grown in 10 liter pots on the balcony. Spring onions are also known as leek onions, winter hedge onions, winter onions.
