Description

Turkish marjoram 'Bristol Cross' is a perennial from the labiate family. This Mediterranean perennial originates from Turkey, where it mainly grows in the mountain ranges of the south. There it thrives on limestone cliffs and steep slopes. However, the perennial Turkish marjoram 'Bristol Cross' has now also found its way to Central Europe, where gardeners like to grow it as an ornamental plant. But it is not only an extremely decorative ornamental plant, it also has many other properties that make this marjoram a particularly valuable treasure. Origanum amanum 'Bristol Cross' grows upright and branches out quickly. Overall, this perennial reaches a height of up to 20 cm. Small, heart-shaped leaves, about 10 - 15 mm long and silver-grey in color, sit in an opposite arrangement on the slender stems - they are evergreen and can be seen at any time of year. The longed-for flowering period of this garden plant begins in June. Delicate violet to magenta-colored flowers surrounded by green-pink bracts appear until August. The special thing about these flowers is their shape. It is reminiscent of the flower shape of hops, except that they are much longer and ball-like.

Growing tips

Turkish marjoram 'Bristol Cross' only has low demands on its location. It will do in a sunny to semi-shady spot where the soil is well-drained, dry to fresh and has a sandy-loamy structure. The 'Bristol Cross' feels very much at home in an open space, in a herb bed, in a perennial bed or even in a container - planted in groups or individually. However, care should be taken to maintain a distance of around 20 - 30 cm between the individual plants. As already mentioned, Origanum amanum 'Bristol Cross' is not just an ornamental plant. It is also ideal for seasoning and refining salads, sauces and dishes with tomatoes, such as pasta or pizza, with a taste reminiscent of a mild oregano aroma. The beautiful flowers are just as edible as the leaves and are a guaranteed highlight as a decoration for a dessert or as a cut flower in a vase. Origanum amanum 'Bristol Cross' exudes a pleasant, spicy fragrance.
