Description

This plant is frost-hardy and tolerates very cold weather. It can tolerate temperatures down to -15°C or less, but this is only possible if the soil is well drained. Cold and damp soil can be fatal for the plant. However, especially if the plant is not yet established, you should apply a thick layer of mulch around the plant stem to protect the roots from cold temperatures. Use organic white gravel mulch, as organic mulch remains moist and can cause the plant to rot. Round-leaved oregano prefers full sun. Do not grow it in wet areas as the soggy soil does not drain, which can lead to root rot and fungal diseases. It prefers alkaline soils, but also tolerates slightly acidic soils. It tolerates drought well and, once established, can survive without water for several months (about 4 months of drought if temperatures are not too high). Once the plant is established, it normally does not need to be watered. However, if there is no rain for a long time or the weather is very hot, you should water it and allow the soil to dry out completely before watering again. Pruning the round-leaved oregano does not maintain its shape and encourages bushier growth. You should prune the plant in early spring and cut back the old, weak or too dense stems. The best time to plant is spring or fall, depending on the climate. Avoid planting in extreme temperatures.
