Pea weevils

How to get rid of pea weevils

The 4 to 5 mm small, brown pea weevils lay their eggs in the pea pods in July. After about 10 days the larvae begin to eat their way into the pods. There they develop into beetles (about 9 weeks) which overwinter in the pea seeds. Infested peas and pods are unfit for consumption and have numerous holes.

Treatment

Once the larvae are inside the pod, there is not much that can be done as the infestation is usually detected late. When harvesting the pea plants, it is best to loosen the soil around the plants to dislodge any beetles that may have burrowed in. The infested plants should be placed in the freezer for a few days after harvest to kill the pests. You can then dispose of the plants with household waste (not compost) to be on the safe side.
