Cheltenham's Green Top is an old English bedding variety that existed before 1880. Its name refers to the green-colored edible foliage. It forms heavy, long pink-red roots that taper towards the bottom. They grow to an average length of over 20 cm and have a circumference of 15 cm. They can be harvested at any stage, even much smaller and therefore much earlier. Young leaves are harvested for fresh salad, older leaves are steamed and eaten like spinach. This beetroot is still appreciated for its exceptionally delicate taste, even if the skin is somewhat rough and the color inside is a slightly lighter shade of red than modern varieties.
Non hybrid
Not frost resistant
They can be sown outdoors from April. Sowing depth should be approx. 2-3cm. A row spacing of 30cm and a planting distance of 10cm is required. Germination in 10-16 days at 12-20°C. Beet is a very undemanding vegetable and makes hardly any demands on the substrate. A humus-rich, nutrient-rich, well-drained soil is ideal. Care should be taken to ensure constant soil moisture throughout the entire growth phase. Further growing tips for beet.
