botanical name: Fragaria x ananassa Flower: white, in May Growth: somewhat more delicate than other garden strawberry varieties Fruit: shiny red, very attractive fruit with an intense fragrance and aroma Ripening time: end of June Fertilization: self-fertile Manilla is a new French variety with a wild strawberry flavor. The fruits are very aromatic and juicy and relatively firm, so that they can be stored for several days when picked. Connoisseurs appreciate them for their special taste. This new variety is delicious when eaten fresh, but is also suitable for processing and gives jams a bright red color. Manilla produces sweet fruit even in partial shade and is very resistant to disease.
Non hybrid
Frostproof
Planting preparations: Choose the sunniest spot in your garden for the strawberry bed. Add plenty of compost or well-rotted cattle manure to the soil in good time. Planting: The best time to plant your own strawberry cuttings is in late summer. Frigos or bare-root plants are planted in spring. Potted strawberry plants can be planted all year round. Care measures: Strawberries need plenty of water in the year of planting. Watering in the morning prevents fungal diseases, as does sticking a few cloves of garlic between the strawberries. Other onion plants such as onion sets or, as a perennial partner, chives are also favorable mixed cultivation partners. A row of bush beans in the middle between the strawberry plants or spinach is also practical. You can mulch the bed with rotted leaves after planting to reflect the strawberries' original woodland habitat. Consistent weed control is important. If straw is spread between the plants in April, the fruit will remain clean and healthy and will not need to be washed.
