The Andean berry, also known as the Cape gooseberry, originates from the highlands of Peru and Chile. In the 19th century, sailors brought the fruit to South Africa and from there it spread near the Cape of Good Hope. The fruits not only taste very good, they also look great. They are particularly rich in vitamin C and beta-carotene. The fruits have a pleasantly tart taste and are easy to cultivate in our country.
Non hybrid
Not frost resistant
The Andean berry is planted from mid-May in a sunny and sheltered spot outdoors or in a hobby greenhouse. It is also ideal for growing as a container plant in a sunny spot on a balcony or terrace. The Andean berry is ready to harvest as soon as the lampion-shaped skin looks straw-like and dry and the berry inside is orange in color.
