Description

The pineapple cherry is the "little sister" of the Cape gooseberry. It ripens already in July, the fruits taste sweet and sour with a distinct pineapple flavor. They grow in a yellowish, bladder-like sheath of fine plant tissue. Therefore, it is sometimes called bubble cherry. Once the sheath turns brownish, they can be harvested. Ripe fruits also fall from the bush. They are so well protected by their sheath that they can easily be picked up from the ground and eaten. The plant is a mass bearer. It grows broadly branched and forms many yellow flowers. Within a few weeks, these then form a fairly solid sheath in which the yellow-orange berry develops. The plant is hardly susceptible to pests or diseases. It reaches a height of about 80 cm.
