1ST YEAR
FOLLOWING YEARS
The earliest variety in production. The stems are red at the base and turn green further up. This variety is particularly suitable for propagation. The stems can be ready to harvest as early as February, or if left to grow naturally, they are ready to harvest from March.
Non hybrid
Frostproof
Plant the rhubarb from fall to spring in a sunny location in well-drained soil. Prepare the soil in advance by working in plenty of well-rotted manure and removing all weeds. When planting rhubarb with buds from mature crowns, plant them so that the top of the crown is 3 cm below the soil and leave a distance of 75 cm between the plants. Resist the temptation to harvest the stems in the first year to allow the plant to establish properly. In spring, remove the emerging flower heads as soon as they appear. From the second year onwards, the stems can be harvested from April to June when the leaves have fully developed. To do this, pull at the base of each stem and twist it away from the crown. Only harvest a few stalks at a time. Water the rhubarb in summer during dry periods to prevent the soil from drying out. When the leaves die back in the fall, remove the older stalks and apply a mulch layer of well-rotted manure around the crown. Caution! The leaves of rhubarb plants are poisonous if eaten.
