Growing tips

Sow the leeks thinly from March to April at a depth of 1 cm in a well-prepared seedbed and transplant them to their final location in June. Or sow leek seeds indoors from February to April to a depth of 1 cm in modules with well-drained sowing soil. Keep them in a propagator or in a sealable container in a plastic bag at a temperature of 10 to 15 °C until germination, which usually takes 14 to 21 days. After germination, grow the leek plants in cool conditions. When the leek is at least 15 cm high, plant it in a well-prepared, rich, fertile and well-drained soil in sun or partial shade. Plant the leeks with a distance of 25 cm between plants and 30 cm between rows. Dig the planting holes with a thick spade or trowel to a depth of 15 cm and place the leek so that it reaches the bottom. Fill each hole with water and flush enough soil around the plants to allow them to establish. This planting method will result in leeks with well-blanched stems. Cover the plants with a protective net or fleece to protect them from birds and insects. Water the plants thoroughly after planting.
