Description

Leek "Zermatt" is an early Swiss giant variety with a long stem and upright foliage. This variety is reasonably resistant to rust and has good storage properties. It is also suitable for the production of baby leeks and the harvest time depends on the sowing time, but the best harvest time is from July to October. The leek can be stored well after harvesting if it is wrapped in foil.

Growing tips

Early sowing can be done under glass at 14°C. Sow the seeds in pots or trays and cover with a layer of compost or vermiculite. For outdoor sowing, sow the seeds thinly, 1 cm deep in drills 30 cm apart in a finely raked soil. Water the soil regularly, especially during dry periods. As soon as the early seeds have germinated, transplant them into individual pots and allow them to continue growing under glass until April before moving them to a cold frame to harden off and planting them out 25-30 cm apart in the row and 45 cm between rows. Sowing outdoors: Once the plants are large enough to handle, lift them carefully and plant them with a trowel or dibber at the same spacing as above and water. Continue watering in dry weather. Soil the stems during the growing season to increase the length of the blanched stem. For larger leeks for kitchen or display, increase the distance between plants to 30-45 cm.
