Description

Site selection and soil conditions The asparagus bean is a climbing plant. It is best allowed to climb up strings. A massive framework of beanstalks, as with the runner bean, is not necessary. The asparagus bean needs a warm and sunny spot in the garden. In regions with a harsher climate and cooler summers, however, they should be cultivated in a greenhouse in order to achieve ripe fruits. As a medium-feeder, it thrives best in soil rich in nutrients and humus, which must also be loose and well-drained. The soil temperature should always be at least 16 °C. Climbing aids The asparagus bean is a climbing plant that twines upwards with the help of its leaf tendrils, provided it is offered vertically stretched wires or cords as climbing aids, otherwise it will remain small and bushy. Propagation and cultivation The asparagus bean is sown under glass at the beginning of April, preferably in a heated greenhouse. To do this, place 3 to 5 seeds in a seed pot. The germination temperature is between 20 and 22 degrees Celsius. After about a week, the seedlings can be transplanted; the planting distance between the individual plants should be 120 x 40 cm. This requires plenty of space in the garden or a spacious greenhouse. The runner bean still needs a minimum night-time temperature of 16 degrees Celsius and daytime temperatures between 20 and 22 degrees Celsius. It is therefore hardly suitable for growing outdoors in our Central European climate.
