The lemon tree (Citrus limon) originates from Asia (China and India), where it has been cultivated for over a thousand years. It is thought to have originated from a cross between bitter orange (Citrus aurantium) and citron (Citrus medica). It is closely related to the bergamot (Citrus x bergamia), which has the same parent species. The lemon tree, also known as the true lemon, belongs to the citrus plant genus (Citrus) within the rue family (Rutaceae).
