The helmet bean, also called hyacinth bean or Fasel bean, is thought to have originated in Africa, but it is also cultivated in tropical India. The flowers and pods are purple in color, making Lablab purpureus a distinctly decorative plant. The beans are used similarly to the common bean - both the young pods and the mature seeds can be eaten cooked. The taste of the helmet bean is strongly aromatic. Sowing in the open ground after the Ice Saints in mid-May to early July. Sowing depth: 2-4 cm. For row sowing, plant distance 40-50 cm in the row and 100-120 cm row distance. Likes sun and partial shade. Does not tolerate wet soils. Pole beans need a pole or something else to climb up on.
