Carnations are a genus of plants belonging to the carnation family (Caryophyllaceae). There are 320-600 species. Annual and perennial. The biennial bearded carnations only flower in the 2nd year. Grow up to approx. 50 cm tall. Herbaceous plants that form strong taproots and sometimes rhizomes. They are cultivated as ornamental plants that produce white, pink, red to purple flowers.
