Passion fruit (Passiflora edulis) belongs to the passion flower family (Passifloraceae). Edulis means "edible." It It is distinguished between the passion fruit or purple granadilla (edulis), which is more cold tolerant and self-pollinated, and the passion fruit or yellow granadilla (flavicarpa), which is resistant to fusarium and nematodes and is cross-pollinated. Oil is extracted from the seeds of the berries. Passion fruit is used as a medicinal plant.
