Red cabbage is a heavy feeder and therefore needs a well-fertilized, lime-rich soil and fertilization in between during the head formation. Plant manure, rock flour and compost are therefore well suited. Organic components are particularly important. However, you should not over-fertilize, as this will affect the taste. Late varieties should also not be fertilized from September onwards. The location can be sunny or partially shaded. Important for cabbage varieties: Only grow on the same bed every 3-4 years to avoid diseases and pests. Red cabbage can be sown directly or grown in advance. The period depends on the variety, with early varieties, cultivation begins as early as February. Leave at least 50 cm between the plants, otherwise the heads will remain very small and promote disease development. If planting before May, it may be useful to protect the cabbage with a fleece during cold nights. The soil should always be moist. Weeds should be removed regularly. The growing period is approx. 14-21 weeks. For longer storage, take the stalk out of the soil and hang it upside down in a cool, damp place.
