Bottle gourd variety 'Dipper' is climbing. Bottle gourd is not only a tasty vegetable, which is often used in Asian and African cuisine, but also an ethnobotanically extremely significant plant. The dried fruits of the calabash have been used as a storage and drinking vessel for thousands of years. Closed dried fruits can be used like rattles and are probably among the oldest musical instruments. They are also used as resonators for stringed instruments, such as the Brazilian berimbau. Although the calabash was originally native to Africa, it spread as far as America and Asia in prehistoric times. Thus, Lagenaria siceraria is one of the oldest cultivated plants of mankind.
