Description

This shrub, densely covered with elongated leaves, glistens in the winter sun and is a lush green, impressive ornament. Plant lovers who have integrated the slimeberry into their garden are eagerly awaiting the winter months. On mild days, the plant emits a fine, tart and sweet scent of honey and vanilla. The luxurious fragrance is released by countless small white flowers that open between the leaves. The shrub has a spring-like appearance in fine winter! It is an excellent container plant for balconies and terraces and an exotic plant decoration at the entrance to the house. In the front garden, (bot.) Sarcococca hookeriana var. humilis forms the highlight among wintergreen shrubs. This wonderful ornamental shrub combines in a border with snowdrops and spring roses to create a light and pretty plant display. With its lush flowers, it leads the way to the early-flowering ground cover plants. A low hedge of Sarcococca hookeriana var. humilis is discreet and impressive. A loose hedge of boxwood, spindle bush and slimeberry looks attractive all year round and flowers at different times. As a single plant, the shrub forms a beautiful centerpiece in a border with ground-covering perennials and has a high ornamental value with dark berries. The slime berry has short, up to 20 centimetre long, upright, compact and bushy shoots on the lower branches close to the ground. Its dark green leaves grow up to five centimetres long and are lanceolate, tough and have a glossy surface. Small, roundish flowers form in the leaf axils in December. The stamens protrude clearly. Male flowers have reddish, white flowers with white stamens. The flowers contain essential oils that spread their fragrance in a sheltered spot on the balcony and on the terrace at the entrance to the house. A remarkable characteristic of the slimeberry is its hardiness. The main sun of the slimeberry shines over a long distance during the often lush green of the shrub. Early buds of Sarcococca hookeriana var. humilis are already in December. This is when the first white flowers appear and lend the shrub its beauty to our gardens. At this time it has lush, green berries that turn black one after the other and show the rhythm change on the plant. The insect is peppered and migrates over other shrubs called slimeberry. The plant grows on well-drained, humus-rich, slightly acidic and moist soil. Cultivation tips Planting time is all year round except on frosty days. The shrub is suitable for both sunny and shady locations. The slime berry is hardy. Only specimens in tubs overwinter in a sheltered spot and survive frosty days with an additional fleece.
