The brocade fern 'Metallicum' has an almost metallic, delicate silvery coating on its fronds. This gives this plant a fascination that casts a spell over the observer. No wonder it is known among gardeners as the rainbow fern. The play of colors from silver to red to green is breathtaking. A sight that is second to none. The attractive fronds of the brocade fern 'Metallicum' billow overhead and give the (bot.) Athyrium niponicum 'Metallicum' a wonderful appearance. The rainbow fern is long-lived and continues to spread year after year. The brocade fern 'Metallicum' reaches a height of 40 to 60 centimetres. Its colors and metallic sheen cannot be overlooked. Planted in groups of four to six specimens, an intense play of colors unfolds. Under large trees or in a shaded area at the edge of an open space, Athyrium niponicum 'Metallicum' makes a bright statement! This wonderful perennial is particularly suitable for shady areas of the garden that are not spoiled by the sun. The brocade fern 'Metallicum' is particularly impressive when viewed from a distance. The intense color of the fine fronds adds color and an almost mystical shimmer to shady locations. Especially in shady locations, they prefer a fresh, well-drained and humus-rich soil, regular moisture and the gardener takes care not to plant them under a roof overhang, as they receive little rainfall.
