The common spotted fern was the inspiration for the name of the spotted fern family (Polypodiaceae); the evergreen fern is widespread worldwide and prefers to grow in mild winter regions with nutrient-rich fresh soil without lime, especially on shady rocks and walls, bushes, oak and beech forests, sometimes even as an epiphyte on the bark of trees in areas with high humidity. It often forms large stands in suitable locations.
