The beautiful woodland lady fern develops excellently in fresh, humus-rich soil without waterlogging. Light shade, a loose substrate and sufficient nutrients as well as rest before gardening are desirable. Soil with an acidic pH value is recommended. The plant is robust and hardy and its dead leaf fronds cover the rhizome like a protective blanket in the fall. The care requirements for the woodland lady fern are minimal. At the end of winter, the gardener removes the remains of the leaves, waters young plants and waits patiently for the chiselled fronds to emerge. Athyrium filix-femina grows for many years and is ideal for novice gardeners.
