The elderberry 'Haidegg 17' delights every plant lover with its large yields. The deciduous shrub grows upright with several ascending stems. (Bot.) Sambucus nigra 'Haidegg 17' grows up to four meters in height and reaches almost the same size in width. The black elder is found in the wild in Europe, Asia and North America. As a wild shrub, the elder is preferably found on forest edges or in clearings. Sambucus nigra 'Haidegg 17' is a newer variety from Klosterneuburg in Austria. The special thing about this elderberry variety is its high yield. These are almost twice as high as those of other varieties, as 'Haidegg 17' has extremely large fruit cones. This black elderberry grows vigorously and delights gardeners with regular and good yields. The black berries have a strong, aromatic flavor and can be processed into juices. The beautiful shrub with its overhanging branches is also an ornamental addition to the garden.
Non hybrid
Frostproof
The elderberry 'Haidegg 17' forms large umbrella-shaped flower clusters in summer, from June to July. The flowers are ideal for processing into tasty elderflower syrup. The yellowish-green to creamy white and fragrant flowers develop into dark berry clusters towards summer. The berries are harvested in September. They are edible when cooked and are healthy due to their vitamin content. They are only edible raw for birds and wild animals. When cooked, they can be processed into juices, jellies or jams. The hardy and easy-care large shrub is robust and undemanding. It makes no special demands on the climate or soil. It has a low to medium water requirement. The shrub prefers a sunny to semi-shady location. The ideal soil for Sambucus nigra 'Haidegg 17' is moist and nutrient-rich. Waterlogging or prolonged dry periods do not suit the shrub. The woody plant grows broadly upright and, with its large flowering umbels, is a valuable food plant for various insects. The uncomplicated shrub holds firmly in the soil with its shallow, extensive root system. The strong individual shoots have a white pith on the inside. Elderberry 'Haidegg 17' is resistant to wind, cold and frost. Elderberry 'Haidegg 17' is ideal for the home garden as well as for commercial cultivation due to its huge cones and high yield. In summer, the large, light-colored cones form a magical cloud of fragrance, and in autumn the shrub is full of black berries. Sambucus nigra 'Haidegg 17' is a sensation in the garden as a supplier of berries and as a decorative specimen. The shrub is ideal for edging plots or for planting under taller, sparse groups of shrubs. This elderberry variety is a must for every natural garden and an outstanding shrub for commercial cultivation.
