Description

The 'Rondo' columnar apple combines all the positive characteristics of an apple tree in one plant. It grows in a columnar shape with a maximum height of 300 centimetres and a width of 60 centimetres. The slender shrub takes up little space. This makes it an ideal choice for a small garden or on the balcony. Its delicious apples ripen in the second half of September. They taste great freshly picked from the tree or can be stored in a cool room until January. Nothing is easier than harvesting the (bot.) Malus 'Rondo'. Its fruits are ready to pick when the stalk can be easily detached from the branch. The red cheeks of a ripe apple shine bright red between the dense green foliage. Columnar apples hang at handle height and are very easy to pick. The yellowish, crunchy flesh is hidden under the skin. It is juicy and tastes pleasantly sweet and sour with a fine apple aroma. The shape of the 'Rondo' columnar apple does not give away the abundance of fruit produced by this slender, graceful tree. It bears abundantly after a short time and regularly produces high yields. At the end of April, the 'Rondo' crab apple blossoms with decorative white-pink flowers. Apple trees produce significantly higher yields if there is another pollinator variety nearby. Other columnar apple varieties such as 'Pomgold', 'Rhapsodie' or 'Sonate' are well suited for this. Bees and bumblebees love apple blossoms and carry the pollen from tree to tree. Malus 'Rondo' requires a sunny, sheltered location. It loves a well-drained, humus-rich substrate from which it draws many nutrients. It grows slowly and retains its slender columnar shape with age. It is easy to care for. There is no need for time-consuming pruning, as it grows a maximum of 30 centimetres per year. The small fruit tree is robust and resistant to the dreaded apple pests, so no pesticides are used. In a hot summer, the 'Rondo' columnar apple needs plenty of water and additional fertilizer every two weeks.
