The true black cumin (Nigella sativa) is a buttercup. It is not, as its name suggests, related to caraway or cumin. The herbaceous plant develops solitary flowers with white to light blue blossoms. From them develop the small, black seeds. Due to its origin, black cumin is a heat-loving plant and has a relatively long growing season.
Non hybrid
Frostproof
The site should be chosen sunny and warm with light soil. Heavy soil, which tends to waterlogging black cumin does not like at all. The soil should be permeable and not prone to compaction. The seeds are sown directly into the garden from March to April. Black cumin seeds are light germinators and should therefore be covered only thinly with soil. After two to three weeks, the seeds should germinate. In August or September, the seeds mature in the flowers and are ready to harvest. Dry the seeds well before using them as a spice.
