Description

Cornelian cherry 'Schönbrunner Gourmet Dirndl' is a versatile shrub for natural gardens and orchards. Many people know the cornelian cherry as a wild shrub, but less common is the use of the delicious fruit of (bot.) Cornus mas 'Schönbrunner Gourmet Dirndl'. The stone fruits of the plant are ideal for processing into delicious compotes, jams, juices and liqueurs. They are pear-shaped and shine out in a striking red from between the branches of the 'Schönbrunner Gourmet Dirndl' cornelian cherry. The fruits, also known as 'Kornellen', are ripe for harvesting from the end of August and have a tart aroma, taking on a sweet taste when fully ripe. The fruit contains a lot of vitamin C and is healthy. Birds also enjoy the fruit and like to eat it. This makes the cornelian cherry 'Schönbrunner Gourmet Dirndl' a good bird food plant in the garden.

Growing tips

Bright yellow flowers appear on the leafless branches of the plant in February to March and can be seen from afar thanks to their radiance. Due to its early flowering period, the cornelian cherry 'Schönbrunner Gourmet Dirndl' offers bees their first honey harvest in spring. An ecologically valuable ornamental shrub! What many people don't know is that the flower buds are also a culinary highlight. Briefly fried in a pan, they are a tasty ingredient for a salad. In order to obtain a good fruit set, it is advisable to plant two varieties of cornelian cherry, with the wild species serving as a good pollinator. Cornus mas 'Schönbrunner Gourmet Dirndl' is a variety from the Höhere Bundeslehr- und Forschungsanstalt in Vienna Schönbrunn, which scores with high yields. The plant is suitable for small groups of fruit trees and is a good choice for a free-growing hedge. This is because the cornelian cherry 'Schönbrunner Gourmet Dirndl' has a well-branched growth habit. As it is not fast-growing, it can easily find a place in a smaller garden. It can be expected to grow to a height of around 200 cm, after a few years the shrub can reach up to six meters in height. The plant develops between 300 and 400 cm in width. The cornelian cherry 'Schönbrunner Gourmet Dirndl' is tolerant of pruning and its branches are traditionally used as St. Barbara's branches. Cut on December 4, they bloom in the vase until Christmas. The cornelian cherry 'Schönbrunner Gourmet Dirndl' is adaptable and accepts any slightly acidic to strongly alkaline soil. This large shrub does extremely well in a sunny to semi-shady location. Cornus mas 'Schönbrunner Gourmet Dirndl' is hardy and easy to care for.
