The cornelian cherry (Cornus mas), also called Herlitze, Dürlitze, Hirlnuss, in Austria also Dirndl, Dirndling, Dirndlstrauch or Gelber Hartriegel, in German-speaking Switzerland Tierlibaum, is a plant species and belongs to the genus of dogwood (Cornus) within the dogwood family (Cornaceae). Contrary to the German name, it is not a type of cherry. In Germany, this shrub flowers in March/April, usually even before the forsythia.
Non hybrid
Not frost resistant
The location should be as sunny and semi-shady as possible. Otherwise, the cornelian cherry is rather undemanding when it comes to soil conditions and can also withstand dry periods. It also requires few nutrients, so it rarely needs to be fertilized. An addition of compost in spring is sufficient.
