The common fig (Ficus carica) is often simply called the fig tree because of its fruit and originates from Asia Minor. It is one of the oldest cultivated and useful plants in the world and is very popular with us as a potted plant. Fig trees are prized for their sweet, edible, green or purple fruit. In pots, the Mediterranean plants with their decorative leaves grow to a height of two to three meters. The flowers are inconspicuous. Look out for self-fertile varieties when buying. The 'Violetta' variety, known as the Bavarian fig, is particularly robust and hardy. According to the breeder, it can withstand temperatures down to -20 degrees. The variety 'Michurinska-10' is considered to be at least as hardy.
