An unusual sight in our gardens! The fig 'Rouge de Bordeaux' is a wonderful fruit tree with fantastic growth, beautiful foliage and delicious fruit. Its attractive and unmistakably lobed leaves are a fresh green. Thanks to their unique shape and size, they lend their surroundings a Mediterranean flair. The initially green fruits peek out from between the foliage, turning a rich blue-violet over time. The garnet-red flesh pampers the palate with an intense, aromatic sweetness. Robust and hardy down to -15 °C, (bot.) Ficus carica 'Rouge de Bordeaux' is a popular tree. This fig variety grows as a densely branched shrub that reaches a height of 180 to 250 centimetres. The plant varies in width from 60 to 200 centimetres. With an annual growth of up to 20 centimetres, Ficus carica 'Rouge de Bordeaux' grows relatively slowly. In the garden, the shrub attracts attention as an effective solitary shrub. The fig 'Rouge de Bordeaux' adorns velvety lawns and open spaces. Its lush greenery creates a wonderful contrast against white house walls and walls. In Mediterranean gardens, it shines in combination with oleander and olive trees. With its large, bright green leaves and dense, spreading growth, it forms an enchanting contrast to the dark green needles of the cypress. In a tub, a specimen of this variety beautifies the balcony and patio. The 'Rouge de Bordeaux' forms large, decorative foliage leaves that grow strongly lobed. The light veins of the leaves stand out elegantly against their strong mid-green. The flower of the fig 'Rouge de Bordeaux' develops inside the young fruit set and is not visible.

After pollination of the flowers, the fruits develop into blue-violet, pear-shaped figs. Their garnet-red flesh contains a multitude of tiny seeds, which taste wonderfully sweet and give the fruit its special flavor. The skin of the fig is also edible. They are harvested in August. The delicious fruits are an irresistible delicacy when eaten fresh. They are an ingredient in many exquisite, exotic dishes and salads. They are also ideal for processing into fruit wine and dried fruit. Figs are rich in vitamins and minerals. The fruits develop excellently in sunny, sheltered locations. Ficus carica 'Rouge de Bordeaux' thrives in loose, nutrient-rich garden soil with a slightly acidic pH value. As the plant requires a lot of water, regular, careful watering is recommended. It does not tolerate waterlogging and the gardener should ensure good drainage. From spring until the fruit ripens, this fig needs regular fertilizer. Pruning should only be carried out when necessary. Figs growing in a planter require winter protection with jute or bubble wrap.
