Plant Recommendation! I planted a persimmon tree here in the Rhine Valley four years ago. It’s supposedly hardy down to -15°. What I didn’t know was that even though the label said “persimmon,” it turned out to be a Sharon persimmon. So what’s the difference? One fruit is more oblong and orange, while the other looks more like an orange apple. The taste is very, very similar. As is customary with persimmons, I’ve always harvested the fruit only after the first frost, since that somewhat mellows the unpleasant bitterness. Since it was still a very small tree, the few fruits were always easy to use up. This year, however, the tree has already set significantly more fruit. So I just cut open a Sharon that looked ripe. A truly special taste experience. It isn’t bitter at all and has the same texture as an apple. I highly recommend it for our new summers with these kinds of temperatures. 😇
