Since there isn't much left to do in the garden, I spent today adding more bamboo and reeds to the large insect hotel. Both the small and large insect hotels have plenty of nesting sites—6 to 8 mm in diameter—for horned mason bees and mason bees. It’s going to be a madhouse there in the spring 🥰🐝 But for those who don’t know yet, they only live for about 4 to 6 weeks. After that, it’s dead quiet again for another year. 😞 That’s why this time I made lots of small ones, 3 to 5 mm in diameter. These are good for steel-blue mason bees, scissor bees, hole-boring bees, masked bees, and digger wasps. Using beech and oak wood, I started drilling holes—3 mm and 4.5 mm. Unfortunately, the drill bits aren’t very long—the 3 mm one is only 115 mm long and the 4.5 mm one is only 135 mm. That’s a good length, but longer would be even better—200 mm. Since these wild bees are smaller than mason bees, it shouldn’t be too much of a problem. These nesting tubes are also used by cuckoo bees. If you want to know what kind of wild bees these are, Just type “cuckoo bees” into Google. Unfortunately, I haven’t had time yet to continue working on the clay-sand wall. If nothing comes up, I’ll continue working on it in early spring. The last photo 😞
