The first phase of the redesign has begun. I’ve created a small bed for perennials and flower bulbs. Tomorrow I’ll pick out some plants from the big garden to put there.
The currants will be planted in the ground. In their place, the blueberries will go into pots. Where the blueberries were, I might plant my mints. However, I’ll bury them in pots so I can keep them under better control. The wild shrubs need to be cut back heavily so more light can reach the garden.
The hedge also needs to be trimmed. However, ground wasps are still nesting there right now, and they don’t take kindly to any disturbance. They’ll attack immediately.
That’s really a pain.
And where the raised beds are, I’ll put up a tomato shelter.
It needs to be as airy as possible so the greenhouse plants still get some light.
I won’t be using that space for tomatoes anymore, but rather for starting seedlings and growing cucumbers.
I’m also going to build a small raised bed by the stairs for herbs. The perennial sunflower is moving to the big garden. This spot isn’t right for it—it always gets powdery mildew here.
