Our plan worked out 🦋🐛🐝😃 We planted our first cover crop on July 10. And it’s been blooming for several weeks now. This is a delight for bumblebees, wild bees, and butterflies, and it even provides food for caterpillars. So it’s very valuable ecologically at this time of year. The cover crop—consisting of winter vetch, crimson clover, phacelia, and ryegrass—is 60 cm tall. Photos 1 through 3 show all plants that are winter-hardy, except for the phacelia. We sowed the second batch of green manure on August 20, and it should bloom around mid-October or late October. It consists of black radish, phacelia, sand oat, marigold, corn cockle, calendula, flax, borage, and alfalfa—50 cm tall so far (Photos 4–5). Not winter-hardy except for alfalfa. There’s one downside to this green manure mix, and that’s the oil radish, which the cabbage white butterfly loves. We’ll see if that’s a problem next year. I’ll keep you posted.
